Exhibition History"Passion on Paper: Masterly Prints from the KIA Collection," March 17 - July 15, 2018, Groos GalleryLabel Text"Mandala is a wonderfully loaded word that can carry spiritual and psychological meanings but all Day ever said was that she had circular subjects in mind when she carved her blocks. The image seems to percolate with possibilities, perhaps it even looks eerie. Much of this mystery comes from the manner in which Day chose to print this woodcut. Using primarily white ink on black
paper was an interesting twist on the definition
of a print as a black and white image. The artist’s simple shift from conventional thinking demonstrates the impact materials can have on the presentation of the image.
The International Graphic Arts Society (IGAS) published the print in both the United States and Europe, providing Day with a huge audience. This also gave collectors a good opportunity to acquire contemporary art at a very affordable price. The KIA acquired the print immediately in the year it was issued (written by Nancy Sojka for Passion on Paper: Masterly Prints from the KIA Collection, 2018).
