There is nothing special about the manner in which the etching and aquatint were laid down, though they were carried out very well. There is something satisfying in just looking at the richness of Bontecou’s lines, her intriguing shapes, and the beauty of the black and brown inks on this very white sheet of paper.
Bontecou is best known as a sculptor. Her imagery relates to the idiosyncratic and whimsical shapes that she was introducing into her work at the time. The brown upper area of the image is pure aquatint. It is a classic example of the granular characteristic of the process that permits the creation of broad passages of tone in etching. Every step required to realize this image was well thought out and carefully executed. Bontecou’s
