They are stripped of context and reduced to their most basic forms. Kelly eliminates gestural strokes and produces hard-edged fields of one or two bold, flat colors. "In my work I don't want you to look at the surface;
I want you to look at the form, the relationships."
The military draft interrupted Ellsworth Kelly’s study of art in New York. After serving in the U.S. Army, he remained in France until 1954. Separated from the dominant Abstract Expressionists in New York during these years, Kelly was able to develop his own style. His minimalist forms and bright colors show the influence of French artist Henri Matisse.
