Label TextLaurence Fink captured a truly noteworthy moment of unguarded expression by three people at a gala New York City event. While both women appear reflective in completely different ways, the one in the center is applauding, as is the man to the right. His attention seems to be riveted on the woman at the left whose demeanor is much more subdued. Fink was in the middle of the project for which he is best known. Called Social Graces, it is a series of photographs that compares people at glitzy social gatherings such as this with working-class individuals in rural Pennsylvania attending events such as birthday parties and graduations. Social Graces was the subject of an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1979. In 1984, Fink published eighty of the images as a book.
