Exhibition HistoryRound and Round, Ethel Denton Groos Gallery, November 4, 2017 - March 4, 2018Label TextLiving in New York in the 1950s, Angelo Savelli was acquainted with the Abstract Expressionist painters. But he found the violence of their action painting unappealing. Guided by Yoga philosophy and meditation, Savelli forged an artistic path that was a synthesis of Western and Eastern ideas. Savelli created his first completely white piece in 1956. Within three years, he was working exclusively in white, but using a variety of materials, including embossed paper, paint, plain canvas, rope, plaster, and fabrics. He sought simplicity, purity, and light. Relying upon the eternal, divine quality of geometry—rendered in only the color white—Savelli aspired to depict the essential nature of things.
