Label TextAlthough Freckelton's paintings appear casual, the objects are carefully selected and meticulously arranged. Numerous preparatory studies are produced in pencil and oil and Freckelton sometimes uses photography to capture fleeting moments like lighting effects and flowers in full bloom, which she can refer to when necessary. While choosing objects with a cerebral connection, she also juxtaposes items of varying colors, textures, and physical properties. Further contrast is created by combining natural and man-made objects. Mirrors are added to create depth and, finally, the image is unified through light and shadow.
Mirror Image brings together many of these criteria in a thought-provoking composition where reality and representation collide. Reflected in a large oval mirror is an arrangement of domestic objects including a ceramic tureen shaped like a cabbage. Freckelton asserts the quiet dignity of each object with her meticulous technique and attention to detail.
