"Stephen Hansen: You Are Here," KIA Interactive Gallery (June 18 - August 28, 2022)Label TextThis print by Stephen Hansen reminds us of the ubiquitous habit, in Michigan, of mapping the outline of the Lower Peninsula upon our own bodies. In the foreground, a helpful Michigander proclaims, “You are Here,” on a map which is, quite literally, readily
at hand.
In You are Here, Hansen condenses the elements he considers representative of Kalamazoo, where he studied and emerged as a professional artist in the 1970s-80s. In the background, local architecture and monuments are assembled in a compressed Kalamazoo skyline. Hansen's "everyman" caricatures humorously represent the people of the city with reference to local history, cultural institutions, business, and agriculture. And of course, the windows of the KIA reveal a festive event—perhaps the opening of Hansen's 1992 retrospective for which this print was made.
