Label TextIn many of Curry’s work, the bounty and power of Nature is often set in sharp contrast to the efforts of man to control and exploit that bounty. In Prize Stallions, this contrast is shown in the tension between the powerful, lunging horse and the desperate attempts of the handler to restrain it. The lithograph is based on a chalk drawing that Curry made for the cover of Wisconsin Country Magazine, published by University of Wisconsin agriculture students. The print is similar in subject matter to a painting, the Belgian Stallion, which was Curry’s first work completed after he became artist-on-residence at the University of Wisconsin in 1938.
