Label TextThis jar brings together two of the most admired colors in Chinese ceramics: celadon and cobalt. Celadon ware, which ranges from gray-green to jade green to light blue-green, was highly prized in the Song dynasty (960-1279) but was eventually displaced in popularity by cobalt underglazed blue-and-white ware. This eighteenth-century work combines two aesthetics: the elegance of celadon with the storytelling details in cobalt, creating a striking warrior jar that depicts soldiers returning from battle, both on foot and on horseback. On the backside of the jar, two blue bats, auspicious symbols representing happiness and longevity, flit about—a fitting tribute for a return from battle.
