Trained as an etcher, he was first drawn to the power of wood engraving when he saw a striking engraving of Abraham Lincoln in 1929. He taught himself the technique through trial and error, and devoted himself to the medium after that time. Cheffetz took many of his subjects from the New England countryside he loved. Rural Schoolhouse shows a one-room country school in the Vermont hills. Isolated in a small valley and empty throughout the summer, the building has a silent, evocative presence that is reinforced by the abandoned playground equipment nearby.
