His brutal depiction of the land stripped of its topsoil by plowing and erosion was an important factor in generating support for soil conservation. Cap Rock Ranch, a lyrical representation of the southwestern landscape in which man lives in harmony with nature, suggests a possible alternative to the usual exploitation of the land.
