His considerable ability as a draughtsman is apparent here as he uses varying tonal levels in the sky and in the deep shadows to suggest the end of day, as well as the end of the harvest. As in many of Wood’s images, the orderly, diagonal rows of haystacks in the surrounding fields can be considered symbolic of the fruitful result of human endeavor.
