It is the salty remnant of a huge inland sea that once covered a major portion of Nevada and remains an important site in Paiute Indian culture. Unusual cone-like land formations rise from and around the lake. Depending on light and weather conditions, the color of the water can change in visually intriguing ways. Desert scenes are among Richard Misrach’s best known themes. Sometimes his studies focus on the intrusion of people into natural areas. At other times, they are just beautiful artistic compositions concerned with exploring color gradations and interesting expanses of space. Misrach is credited with being an important figure who introduced color into fine art photography in the 1970s and for working with a large format camera, which was uncommon at the time.
