Label TextThis major work from Glier's Garden Court series, presents a scene thick with mystery and wide open to interpretation. Glier's skillfully rendered natural forms--cascading vines gently outlined in charcoal and luscious brushwork suggesting graceful shrubs, flowers, and branches--provide a stark contrast to the stained and marred courtyard wall. Glier is known for large-scale paintings that make veiled social and political comments through realistic imagery. The Garden Court series was originally accompanied by a book in which other artists wrote stories and poems inspired by the painting's engimatic scenes. This series suggests a balance between the forces of man and nature. Is the work about renewal as the plants cover over the human history of this place? Death vs. Rebirth? Organic vs. Inorganic? Did something violent happen here? The artist invites the viewer to ponder and look beyond the surface.
