Label TextLocated on Lake Michigan in Van Buren County, the Palisades Nuclear Plant was built between 1967 and 1970 and began formal operations in 1973. Taken nearly a decade later, Schneiter’s Palisades Nuclear Plant, 1983, presents an atmospheric and hazy view of the facility, offering an impression rather than a precise rendering of its hard edges and mechanical infrastructure. The intermingling of fog and steam contributes to the photograph’s mood. Sweeping power lines emerge from the plant, looming overhead and cutting across the image toward viewers. Interestingly, in 2007, the Palisades Nuclear Plant was sold to Entergy, which secured a license to operate the facility through 2031. Since 2018, however, the plant has faced repeated closure efforts, reflecting ongoing debates about the future of nuclear energy in the United States.
