The title refers to all forms of freedom, of possessing it, and permitting it. We can muse about the levels of freedom intended for the individual and with research, we could determine if any significance could have been implied toward the politics or history of the time. The lithograph includes a few classic symbols with which to contend. The open cage held by the woman is yellow, perhaps a reference to being “gilded.” The bird is no ordinary creature but the white dove of peace. It flutters against an isolated zone of pure landscape that seems more like another picture within the picture than just an ordinary distant background.
Dumas was a prolific painter and printmaker who found inspiration among the native people across South America. He taught, worked, and exhibited extensively in the United States and Europe (written by Nancy Sojka for Passion on Paper: Masterly Prints from the KIA Collection, 2018)."
