"The Way Forward: New Acquisitions at the KIA," July 28 - December 2, 2018.Label TextAfter fleeing Nazi occupation in 1938, husband and wife, Gertrud and Otto Natzler collaborated in their pottery studio in Los Angeles for nearly four decades. The pair and their work became world-renowned—greatly influencing the ceramic landscape. Like all of the pieces the partners made, this deceptively simple, incredibly thin-walled vessel was thrown by Gertrud and finished with a glaze developed by Otto. Otto’s glazes (of which there are over 2,000) and firing techniques were carefully selected to enhance and highlight each individual piece Gertrud created.
Form was paramount to Gertrud. Their vessels seem timeless now, however they were strikingly different from the chunky and often ornately decorated ceramics that were in popular in the 20th century.
