Weber became particularly fond of the woodcut, creating many on small scraps of basswood with a penknife. In these simple images, the artist found a creative truth that conventional realism could not provide. With an attitude very close to that of the African artist he wrote: "Every bit of material contains a work of art. To bring to light the hidden beauty, the artist must establish spiritual intimacy with, and respect for his material."
