"American Perspectives on Modernism" KIA Traveling Exhibition, Hoyt Art Center, New Castle, PA (Sept. 14 - Nov. 12, 2021).Label TextLike other early 20th century artists, Max Weber felt a special closeness with the images and techniques of the African carvers. Weber became particularly fond of the woodcut, creating many on small scraps of basswood with a penknife. In these simple images, the artist found a creative truth that conventional realism could not provide. With an attitude very close to that of the African artist he wrote: "Every bit of material contains a work of art. To bring to light the hidden beauty, the artist must establish spiritual intimacy with, and respect for his material."
