Exhibition History"Passion on Paper: Masterly Prints from the KIA Collection," March 17 - July 15, 2018, Groos Gallery.Label TextYvonne Jacquette depicts contemporary landscape from an aerial view. She has recorded sights in different seasons and parts of the world, but concentrates mainly on Maine and New York City, the two places she calls home.
"Paper is integral to every project. Its role depends on choices made by the printmaker. In this lithograph, the beauty of the blank sheet serves as the central component of the image—a suggestion of fog hovering above a river. The scene is a Maine locale that Jacquette depicted several times and in different mediums. This was her fourth consideration of the subject.
Like the trick of having the blank sheet represent a weather phenomemon, Jacquette uses additional shorthand devices that we readily understand as stand-ins for real objects. With just a few strokes, she convinces us that we are looking at boats moored in the harbor and cruising down the river. Patterns and blobs of organized crayon and brushstrokes transform into a believable landscape of fields and trees surrounding the town represented largely by the rectilinear shapes of the roofs and box-like buildings. Her presentation of the world from the elevated perspective of an airplane or tall building contains an inherent magic that immediately charms viewers (written by Nancy Sojka for Passion on Paper: Masterly Prints from the KIA Collection, 2018)."
