The work day is beginning with modest foot traffic across the bridge. Power lines and poles—indications of Japan’s rapid modernization—are silhouetted against
the sky. Hasui Kawase was one of the most popular artists designing images to be carved and printed for shin-hanga publisher Shozaburo Watanabe. Kawase traveled throughout Japan in order to capture picturesque scenes.
