Label TextThe meaning of the title word, Disputation, is to argue a point passionately. The artist suggests the emotional connotations through the style of his mark-making and the pose of the figure. Breverman used short, quick strokes to describe his subject. These lines flicker and crackle, giving the figure a sense of intense energy. The artist thinks in terms of animated fragments rather than continuous contours. The face and expression of the figure is captured in a few quick lines. Much of the figure's intensity comes from the body, which is posed straight and erect with the hands open and outstretched.
