Look carefully at this large painting and subtle shapes start to emerge. View it from a distance, then examine it up close, and the painting seems to change. The surface is encrusted with tiny dots of color and highlights that change as the viewer’s position and the light source change. Pousette-Dart often squeezed paint directly onto the canvas to create this three-dimensional surface.
Pousette-Dart was part of the Abstract Expressionist painting movement in New York City in the 1940s and 1950s. Fiercely independent, he developed a unique style filled with depth and luminosity.
