"Drawn to Abstraction," Bedford Gallery, Walnut Creek, CA (Sept 28-Dec 15, 2024).Label TextPaul Jenkins was already a well-established figure among New York’s Abstract Expressionist artists when Seeing Voice / Welsh Heart was published in 1965. Bound together in the book are a series of seven original lithographs by Jenkins and seventeen poems by Welsh poet Cyril Hodges. Shortly before beginning this project, Jenkins traveled in Asia, absorbing the spirituality of Eastern religions and the striking oranges and reds of monks’ robes and temples against blue skies. To make the prints, Jenkins streamed and smeared bright, translucent color on a stone with the active movements he also used to guide the flow of paint on canvas. The medium of the book translates action painting’s spontaneous energy—unique records of movement on large canvasses—to the print medium’s inherent reproducibility and the intimate scale of a hand-held page.
