Romano created this woodcut when she and her husband, John Ross, partnered to illustrate a book, Manhattan Island, by May Garelick. Romano’s joyous depiction of children playing together in a variety of games captures the exuberance of Garelick’s text.
This is a good print for study to appreciate the dynamics of classic, multiple color printing. Viewers can easily dissect the image into its three color components and imagine the carving required for each of those separate blocks. A particularly nice touch in the crafting of this composition was the unifying effect that resulted from using the wood grain of the gray block as the background element (written by Nancy Sojka for Passion on Paper: Masterly Prints from the KIA Collection, 2018)."
