Label TextTaken from the interior of the General Motors global headquarters, this Robert Beskangy photograph skillfully captures a view of its towers. Recalling the tones and lines of Louis Lozowick’s lithograph, the artist instead uses natural light and the grids of the building’s window panes to create a towering image of the iconic brand. Notably, this image was taken in 2008, during a time when General Motors and Chrysler, announced that without federal help both companies would face certain bankruptcy, risking the loss of one million jobs. On December 19, 2008, outgoing President George W. Bush announced a $17.4 billion bailout for these iconic American carmakers. Today, both remain in business. General Motors continues to be headquartered in Detroit and remains an enduring symbol of American manufacturing, leading auto sales in the United States in 2025.
