Label TextCreated in 1976 to mark the bicentennial of the United States, the Sharpshooter ‘76 series by John Doyle reflects on American history through the lens of war and violence. Presented chronologically, the series begins with Continentals, the work displayed here, titled for the army that fought the British in the Revolutionary War. It presents British and colonial soldiers leaning against each other in a surprisingly relaxed pose. Simultaneously cartoonish and satirical, the image challenges typical representations of the Revolutionary War. Despite belonging to opposing sides, the soldiers are nearly indistinguishable. Doyle reminds viewers that the conflict that birthed the nation was a war of countrymen against countrymen and neighbor against neighbor.
