Exhibition History"Surrealish: The Absurd and Unexpected," KIA Galleries 2 & 5 (June 4 - September 11, 2022)Label Text"“I have always utilized realism to enhance the ‘unrealism’ I wish to describe.”
—Ellen Lanyon
Like that of so many other artists inspired by Surrealism, Ellen Lanyon’s work combines the mundane with the mysterious. Lanyon utilized an automatic or stream of consciousness approach when creating her dreamlike images. When beginning a work she would select an item or a theme and then use free association to build up a scene. Due to the process, Lanyon explained, her works are derived from her unconscious and the recesses of her memories."
