Generally, prints are produced in editions or multiples, but he defines his current print practice by composing images as if they were “one-off originals,” using pigments on painting supports, such as in the series Squeegeeing Acrylic on Canvas that began in 1998. Kimura takes inspiration from the abstract paintings of the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian, though Kimura’s interpretation is layered and rearranged.
About his work, the artist has said, “Translucent layers on a transparent glass plate play a central role in my work. The most interesting characteristics of the translucent layers lie in that they provide a strong feeling of something behind the layers while covering it. In other words, they simultaneously perform two opposite functions: One is to present, and the other is to cover.” [Label for “Sugoi! 200 Years of Japanese Art", 2023]
