"Through the Years" KIA Galleries 2 & 5 (January 29 - April 30, 2021).Label TextSugimoto-dera is a Buddhist temple, reputedly founded in 734. This presentation suggests height and distance with collage-like stacking and layering of stylized forms. Morimura studied oil painting at Tokyo Gakugei University, and originally produced canvases of geometric abstractions. Later turning to woodblock printing, he chose to stay with oil-based inks instead of using the traditional Japanese water-based ink. Oils permit Morimura to work in detail with strong, opaque colors.
