"The Way Forward: New Acquisitions at the KIA," Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, Kalamazoo, Michigan, Joy Light Gallery of Asian Art (Aug 26, 2018 - Dec 2, 2018)Label TextEach panel of this triptych presents an elegant, female musician in a sumptuously patterned kimono, poised to play one of three traditional stringed instruments: the kokyu, koto, and shamisen. Kunisada was the most popular and financially successful designer of ukiyo-e prints of his time. He continually updated his style and was a trend-setter for public tastes. However, his work was not valued as highly by European and American artists collecting Japanese prints in the late 19th century. Only in recent decades has Kuniyoshi been re-evaluated and recognized in the West as one of the great Japanese print designers.
