Exhibition History"The Way Forward: New Acquisitions at the KIA," July 28 - December 2, 2018.Label TextSimon Levin creates wood-fired utilitarian pottery that is made in dialogue with the effects of the kiln. Wood-firing has several inherent qualities and each kiln has different properties and effects on the works inside. Levin accounts for this, creating pots are made of clay bodies that are reactive to variations in temperature and atmosphere. The structural qualities of the pots, in form and texture, are made to catch wood ash, controlling and encouraging the pooling of his glaze. As each body of work is fired, questions are answered and new ones are posed in a progressive conversation with the firing technique. Levin believes in making pots with a revelation of process. Throwing lines, tool marks, and evidence of human touch are an intended part of his surface design. By creating utilitarian art Levin is attempting to connect art with the everyday experience.
