He fully believed in the ethos of the Arts and Crafts movement which was reacting to the damage caused by mass-production and industrialization. Leach supported the elevation of decorative arts to the level of fine arts and valued how things were made. Leach spent the first few decades of his life moving between Japan and England. He received a formal art education in England, but it was in Japan that he became enamored with pottery and the Japanese esthetic. Bernard Leach described himself as a courier between East and West. His work is the interplay of two complimentary cultures. Leach’s forms are related to the pottery of his native England, but his neutral colors and simple decorations draw heavily on Japanese traditions.
