So much so that mountains have become national symbols of Japan and a recurring theme in Japanese art. In Tomonari Hashimoto’s piece, the contemporary artist is taking a centuries-old art form and subject and imbuing it with new techniques and aesthetics. He uses glazes that are high in metal oxides, which give the surface a metallic and rusted appearance. Tomonari Hashimoto’s forms are simple; however, he hopes his minimal forms inspire a moment of introspection about the world around us. [Label for “Sugoi! 200 Years of Japanese Art", 2023]
