Exhibition History"The Way Forward: New Acquisitions at the KIA," July 28 - December 2, 2018.Label Text"Over the course of his career Bolton Brown created more than 400 lithographs. Brown was an avid outdoorsman and mountain climber and much of his work focuses on nature, specifically mountain landscapes. Many of Brown’s lithograph landscapes are tonalist in nature having contemplative and atmospheric qualities. He freed himself from creating strictly realistic images. His images, while sourced from nature, were heavily influenced by mood and imagination. In Storm, Brown uses his approach to tonalism to create a scene in which no one element dominates another. The rain becomes grass and the tree becomes the sky. Nature extends beyond theme for Brown and into his process. Many printmakers work in the transfer method meaning that they create a drawing on paper and then it is transferred to a stone for print. Brown’s preferred method for creating his moody prints involved drawing directly on the stone. He felt this continued the strong man/nature relationship that has existed in art since early cave paintings. "
