Within this overlaid scene of an autumn day, passersby stroll through, unaware of the photographer's lens capturing their comings and goings. In spite of the couples or their idyllic surroundings, a large concrete plinth takes center stage. The artist strategically places the circularly-framed photo of a burning Cape Town countryside over the pedestal’s original occupant. This subversive act—replacing the unidentified monument, creates both a portal and another memorial to consider. The image transports viewers, offering another history, place, and time to commemorate. [From Todd Gray, 2021, KIA]
