"EXPO Chicago 2023" Chicago, Navy Pier (April 11 - 14, 2023).Label TextIn Paris/Cape Town, Gray centers a large circular image of thick, billowing clouds of smoke, dotted by patches of black land over an ordinary park setting. Within this overlaid scene of an autumn day, passersby stroll through, unaware of the photographer's lens capturing their comings and goings. In spite of the couples or their idyllic surroundings, a large concrete plinth takes center stage. The artist strategically places the circularly-framed photo of a burning Cape Town countryside over the pedestal’s original occupant. This subversive act—replacing the unidentified monument, creates both a portal and another memorial to consider.
