Exhibition History"Sugoi! 200 Years of Japanese Art," KIA, Galleries 2 & 5 (May 13, 2023 - September 24, 2023)Label TextYoshitoshi Mori began his art career creating textiles, such as kimonos, as part of the mingei, or folk art, movement. In the 1950s, he began working with paper and printmaking. Yoshitoshi was well-known for creating prints using the kappazui-e stencil techniques—a sequential layering of forms and colors using stencils from thick paper. This tradition dates back to the Nara period (710-794 CE) and artists revived it in the 1920s. The scenes Yoshitoshi created are highly stylized and graphic images that are able to capture emotion and movement. [Label for “Sugoi! 200 Years of Japanese Art", 2023]
