Exhibition History"Sugoi! 200 Years of Japanese Art," KIA, Galleries 2 & 5 (May 13, 2023 - September 24, 2023)Label TextConsidered one of the most important Japanese printmakers of the 20th century, Kiyoshi Saito is a central figure of the sōsaku hanga movement. As a child, Saito dreamed of being a painter and eventually began his training in 1937 at the Hongo Painting Institute. The invitation to join the Zokei Hanga Kyokai group in 1939 was a pivotal moment when the artist switched to printmaking as his primary medium. Early Saito works demonstrate a painterliness and an attention to reproducing the depth and three-dimensionality found in the natural world. However, later works feature refined designs and are more two-dimensional, marked by bold blocks of color and rich textures. Winter in Aizu is from one of the artist’s most notable bodies of work, first published in 1938. [Label from “Sugoi! 200 Years of Japanese Art", 2023]
