Exhibition History"Young American Photographers," KIA (Sept. 2 - 28, 1975). This show later travelled to the Flint Institute of Arts, University of Notre Dame Art Gallery, Grand Rapids Art Museum, and Kresge Art Center Gallery. "Kalamazoo Collects Photography," KIA (Mar. 1980). "Framing Moments: Photography from KIA's Permanent Collection," KIA (Feb. 6 - May 16, 2021)Label TextIn 1974 Abigail Heyman published Growing Up Female: A Personal Photo Journal to great acclaim. Much like the KIA’s detail-rich image, the photographs in that book are concerned with the mixed messages—sometimes amusing or maddening or just plain sad—that girls and women confront as they navigate their roles in the world. Her focus was broad ranging; her subjects could be beautiful and tender or unashamedly brash and confrontational such as the one before us that presents an older woman before a display of sexy undergarments. Such work made Heyman a central figure in the feminist movement. Her work appeared regularly in major publications such as Time, Life, Ms., Harper’s, and The New York Times Magazine.
