Round and Round, Ethel Denton Groos Gallery, November 4, 2017 - March 4, 2018Label TextBarbara Hepworth was a prominent sculptor and one of few female artists of her generation to receive international recognition. She and her friend, Henry Moore, helped define modern sculpture in the first half of the 20th century. In 1933, she began to sculpt simplified shapes and figures with the pierced holes that would become characteristic of both artists’ work. Empty spaces or “absences” accentuate the relationship of positive and negative space, of the form and the space around it.
Sculptors, like painters, often extend their exploration of ideas through the print medium. November Green is one print in a suite of four titled Opposing Forms. This print is more gestural than Hepworth’s deliberate and finished sculpture, but recalls her rounded geometries.
