Fujita Fumio is a Japanese printmaker and painter, and one of the central figures of the sosaku hanga
printmaking movement. He was born in 1933 in Handa City, Aichi Prefecture. Little information is
known about his early life, except that he was deeply inspired by the forests growing up. He
graduated from the Musashino Art School in 1956, with a specialization in oil painting. He trained as a
teacher, but began work as a graphic designer in Tokyo in 1958. Fumio moved outside of Tokyo to
Atsugi in 1963, when he began to experiment in the sosaku hanga style. He exhibited around Japan,
and became famous for his vibrant, forest landscapes. Fumio still lives and works in Atsugi, focusing
on oil painting. He has stopped production of new woodblock prints due to back problems.
