Shapes! Patterns!" KIA Upjohn Mason Grandchildren's Interactive Gallery (March 12 - June 12, 2022).Label TextIn the 1960s, Russian-born immigrant Helen Gerardia—like much of the world—became fascinated by what she described as “the broad new horizons of outer space." Her paintings and prints, in spare colors and shapes emphasizing negative space, imagine the infinite space of the universe. Dynamic, elongated angles resemble rays of light, paths of astral bodies, or unknown forces woven into the fabric of space and time. Helen Gerardia experimented in various styles, including Abstract Expressionism and Cubism, before developing her hard-edged style of geometric abstraction with reduced color.
